Brazil Fall to Portugal in Low-Scoring Contest

Portugal gained revenge on Brazil on Saturday. Having fallen to As Yaras in the first test match, the Portuguese responded by winning 13-5 in Greater São Paulo. he match concludes the two match series with the teams each winning one match.

Both matches were hard-fought and low-scoring. Brazil won game one 10-7 while Portugal won game two 13-5. Despite losing game two, Brazil actually started the match as the stronger team. As Yaras touched down in the try zone for a 5-0 lead after 26 minutes. Carolyne Pereira’s try was the only score of the opening half.

The second-half was vastly different. Brazil were held scoreless by Portugal with the Europeans scoring 13 unanswered points. Inês Marques. scored first to level the contest before captain Daniela Correia landed the conversion and a penalty shortly thereafter for a 10-5 lead.

Brazil had an opportunity at fighting-back only for the Portuguese to withstand the pressure and to come out stronger as Isadora Lopes was yellow carded. Daniela Correia then made it 13-5 with a penalty in the final score of the match.

The final whistle ended international competition for 2023. Brazil will now focus on the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup Qualifiers. Brazil is in search of qualifying for a first-ever Rugby World Cup, be that Men’s or Women’s. 2025 will be the first Women’s Rugby World Cup in which the winning Women’s team from qualifiers advances to the World Cup itself rather than to repechage.
