Matías Moroni back from Argentina XV to Los Pumas

Matías Moroni is back on the roster for Argentina. The Leicester Tiger was named on the Argentina XV for next month’s tour to Georgia and Portugal. This caught many by surprise as Moroni has been a regular in Pumas line-ups since 2016.

Moroni will now not play for the Argentina XV; instead, he has been added to Los Pumas‘ roster to face Scotland.|He replaces Santiago Chocobares who is out for the year. The Toulouse center is to undergo knee surgery.

Argentina play host to Scotland in three test matches in July. They will be in the Northern Argentine cities of Jujuy, Salta and Santiago del Estero. Moroni will travel to Argentina following the completion of the 2021-2022 English Premiership season. He and the Leicester Tigers have a Semi Final this coming weekend against the Northampton Saints and a possible final on June 18.

The change to the roster sees a specialist outside center replacing a player who usually plays at inside center. This suggests that there will be movement within the roster. The most likely scenario will see Jerónimo de la Fuente being the starting inside center and Matías Orlando being his understudy. Orlando has been Argentina’s 13 in the past but played a lot at 12 this season for the Newcastle Falcons.

The outside center position is served by three players. Moroni joins Lucio Cinti and Juan Cruz Mallía to give Michael Cheika three names from elite leagues in Europe. Moroni has 57 caps. By way of comparison Cinti has 7 and Mallía 13.
