Chile assemble strong roster to face Scotland and USA

Chile has assembled a strong roster to prepare for upcoming international competition against Scotland and the USA. Los Cóndores’ June / July fixtures will involve two matches at home and one on the road. Two of them are the winner-goes-to-France series between Chile and the USA.

Los Cóndores are preparing for the three matches in the country’s far north. Preparations see ther players and staff together at a special training camp in Antofagasta. The roster contains 32 players, all of whom came through the local system and were developed by Chilean rugby.

The majority of the roster are players who featured in the 2022 Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR). Chile’s professional team finished second. They defeated Los Jaguares XV in the Semi Final but fell to Peñarol in the final.

The Selknam players are joined by players based in France, Spain and the USA. Flanker Martín Sigren is the team captain. He played under the captaincy of Ignacio Silva in SLAR.

The roster contains Chile’s best players. The team is not quite at full-strength. Center Domingo Saavedra was injured in the final weeks of SLAR. He and prop Ramón Ayarza are missing from the roster.

Chile’s international activity in 2021 was highly noteworthy. The South Americans sent a message to the world that rugby in the region has a new team to take note of. Chile defeated Canada to eliminate the North Americans in RWC qualifiers. As a result, RWC 2023 will be the first Men’s Rugby World Cup without Canada. Chile went on to defeat RWC 2011 and 2019 competitors, Russia in away matches in November.
