Canada to host two World Sevens stops in September

Canada will host two stops when the World Sevens Series returns in September. As reported by Terry Jones in the Edmonton Sun, multiple sources have confirmed that Vancouver and Edmonton have been awarded events set to take place on the weekends of September 18 and 25 respectively.

Vancouver’s BC Place has been a regular venue on the circuit since 2016 and was the location of the last event held prior to the pandemic suspension in 2020. Normally the sixth stop held in March, it will act as the Series opener and the first event following the Tokyo Olympics.

This will be the first time the Sevens Series has landed in Edmonton. Originally intended to take place at Twickenham in London, the stop will temporarily move to Commonwealth Stadium. The venue most recently hosted Canada’s test match against Scotland in 2018.

Both events will be two-day Men’s tournaments only. It’s not yet clear which teams will be competing due to ongoing pandemic travel restrictions. Previously announced stops on this year’s shortened Men’s circuit are Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, and Cape Town.
