Shortened Sevens Series unveiled by World Rugby

The World Sevens Series will return in May after a 14-month hiatus. It’s an unusual format with five tournaments in all plus the possibility of two additional events being added subject to the conditions of the pandemic. None of the confirmed events will take place in the Americas.

Perhaps most unique is that the opening event will take place prior to July’s Tokyo Olympics. Paris will host two women’s tournaments on successive weekends beginning on May 15. Despite taking place in the same location the two weekends will be counted as separate events.

The Series then breaks until October 29 when Singapore hosts a men’s tournament. There are ongoing discussions for further men’s events in London and Vancouver. If approved, they would take place in the space between the Olympics and the Singapore tournament with Vancouver targeting September.

Three combined events have been confirmed. Hong Kong, the most prestigious event on the circuit, will take place over the November 5 weekend, with Dubai following on December 3 and Cape Town hosting the following weekend. Dubai and Cape Town typically serve as the first two events of the season but will now represent its conclusion.

Of note is the absence of any USA-based events. Los Angeles hosted a men’s event in March of 2020 while Glendale opened the previous women’s season in October 2019.
