Argentina Seeks “at least two more” teams in Super Rugby Americas

The second in command at the UAR, Marcelo Corbalán Costilla has confirmed that Argentina is interested in having more teams competing in Super Rugby Americas. Corbalán Costilla told Tucumán  news outlet, La Garceta that the UAR seeks “at least two more” Argentine teams in the South American professional league.

Super Rugby Americas 2023 featured two Argentine franchises: Los Pampas and Los Dogos. The former plays in Buenos Aires and the latter in Córdoba. Los Pampas are under the command of the UAR while Los Dogos play under the Córdoba provincial union.

Los Pampas and Los Dogos are both back for Super Rugby Americas 2024. Los Jaguares XV played in the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR) in 2021-2022 while Los Ceibos (Córdoba based) did so in the inaugural 2020 season.

Corbalán Costilla notes that the UAR believes that there will indeed be at least two more Argentine teams in future seasons. He notes that Tucumán is one province which is expected to join Super Rugby Americas. The norther province is a historic powerhouse of Argentine rugby. It produced many Pumas including the second player to 100 Pumas caps, Nicolás Sánchez and World Cup hat-trick hero against Japan, Mateo Carreras.

Córdoba was green-lighted above Tucumán as the first ‘expansion team’ by the UAR. The decision was based on the conclusion that Córdoba had stronger resources than Tucumán. The provincial government also provided notable financial assistance.

Super Rugby Americas 2024 will involve the same seven teams as that of Super Rugby Americas 2023.
