Rob Cain departs as Women’s Eagles coach

Rob Cain has announced his departure as Head Coach of the Women’s Eagles. A decision on his future was to be made after USA Rugby completed a high performance review, but the 42-year-old says he won’t be returning to his post.

Part of his statement on social media reads:

“My journey has been with some of the most courageous, strong, and talented women I have had the opportunity to coach and I have been fortunate enough to create some brilliant memories with some remarkable people.

“Unfortunately, the challenges have never been greater for the Eagles players to perform to their best of the ability on the international stage. I hope the solutions given to the many threats will be acted upon in the coming months and years ahead.

“Thank you to everyone I have met on my extensive travels within the community and the women’s game. You are some of the best people I have had the opportunity to cross paths with. I would like to wish the USA players and staff good luck and a successful road ahead.”

Cain led the Eagles to a Quarter Final appearance at the World Cup in New Zealand, ultimately defeated by North American rivals Canada. He was appointed in May of 2018, succeeding Pete Steinberg in the role, and finishes with a test record of 5 wins and 17 losses.

It’s the second major departure from USA Rugby in recent weeks, with Men’s Eagles coach Gary Gold stepping down after failing to qualify for Rugby World Cup 2023. Dan Payne also left his post as General Manager of High Performance though he remains in the organization as an advisor on ‘specific projects’ and the review process.
