North American Women, Argentina Men advance at RWC 7s

Both Canada and the USA have advanced to the Quarter Finals in the Women’s draw of the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Cape Town. Of the Americas representatives on the Men’s side, however, only Argentina will move ahead following the USA’s loss to Samoa.

Canada, Uruguay, and Chile each won their first matches of the day in the Men’s qualifying round, with Jamaica competitive but beaten by Scotland. Chile’s success against Germany came from a Vicente Tredinick penalty goal in extra time.

Los Cóndores would not have the class to beat South Africa in the Round of 16, however, and Uruguay were shut out by Australia. Canada were even at halftime against France but then slipped behind in the second half and could not recover.

The USA were left bitterly disappointed by a heavy defeat to Samoa in their only match of the day. Competing without injured stars Kevon Williams, Folau Niua, and Joe Schroeder, the Men’s Eagles could not build any momentum and now fall into the consolation bracket.

Argentina will now be the only Americas entry into the Quarter Finals. Los Pumas produced a strong effort against Kenya, outscoring the Simbas four tries to one. They will now take on New Zealand on Day Two.

The Women’s Eagles powered past Poland with Jaz Gray contributing a hat trick and two tries coming from Kris Thomas. It was also success for Canada, with four players touching down in a comfortable win over China. The two North American sides will now square off against each other in the Quarter Final.

Brazil were within two points of Ireland at halftime thanks to tries from Bianca Silva and Mariana Nicolau. They could not score in the second half while conceding two more tries to the Irish. Colombia were outmatched against New Zealand but did score a memorable try from Laura Mejía.
