14-man Jaguares XV overcome Peñarol

Los Jaguares XV remain unbeaten in the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR). The Argentine franchise were 46-17 winners this evening over Uruguayan side Peñarol. Los Jaguares won cleanly with 14-men; Francisco Gorrissen was red carded late in the first half.

The red card did not change anything. To the contrary, Los Jaguares XV regrouped. They found a way to play with a seven-man scrum and did so effectively. Indeed, Peñarol put up their biggest fight in the first half. The Uruguayan’s first try was the third of the match. Their second try was the eighth.

Los Jaguares XV opened the scoring in the 10th minute. Martín Elías landed his first of two penalties. The first was followed by a try to Martín Cancelliere. The luck of the bounce favored the Argentine winger who scored in the left corner. Nicolás Roger responded with Peñarol’s first points; a 16th minute penalty. Juan Pablo Castro quickly hit back to give the Argentine side try number two.

Both teams were keen on battering up the middle. The tactic saw them exchanging tries. Eric do Santos went over in the 29th minute and Puma Juan Pablo Zeiss replied for Los Jaguares XV in the 33rd minute.

Gorrissen’s red card saw his fellow flanker stepping-up. Juan Martin González continued his excellent tournament. The Mendoza flanker had a strong match in the lineout, on defense and as a ball-carrier. He continues to underline himself as an understudy to Santiago Grondona. The duo offer the elite rear lineout option that Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe excelled at. González’ try just before half time gave Los Jaguares XV a bonus point.

Sebastián Cancelliere and González put the result beyond doubt. Both players scored down the right side with a mismatch that the Peñarol defense could not contain.

Peñarol wanted more points and were determined to find their way to the try line. Eventually they achieved the task. Nicolás Freitas went over in the left corner, just managing to dot the ball down as Sebastián Cancelliere tackled him. Federico Favaro converted from the sideline.

All competing teams will now travel to Montevideo. Rounds six to ten will all be at the Estadio Charrúa. Uruguay’s national rugby stadium will also host the SLAR play-off’s. The first round of matches in Uruguay will see Peñarol facing the Olímpia Lions, and Los Jaguares XV taking-on Os Cobras.
