Selknam easily claim bonus point win over fragile Cobras

Selknam made light work of Os Cobras Brasil XV. The Chilean side easily claimed a bonus point win over what was a fragile Cobras team and performance. Selknam had the bonus point sealed well before half-time and finished with a 66-10 victory.

It was a ten tries to one performance. As impressive as that is on its own, Os Cobras’ one try was an intercept against the run of play. Selknam were dominant in what was one way traffic for all but the opening minutes.

Os Cobras had an early scoring chance. Joshua Reeves attempted a conversion from half way. His kick had the distance but not the accuracy. He would land his second attempt. The 13th minute effort followed Selknam’s opening try. Reeves’ opposite, Ignacio Albornoz split the defense to score.

Selknam’s second try was from their own kick-off. It followed Reeves’ penalty. Scrum-half Patricio Baronio demonstrated great vision to dart through and around to score. The 14th minute score was then followed by a third to fellow Argentine player Santiago Portillo. The flood gates had opened.

Lucca Avelli came on as a blood replacement for Albornoz. His name was quickly added to the scoresheet. His 26th minute try gave Selknam their fourth and, with it, a bonus point. Domingo and Clemente Saavedra also both crossed to give Selknam a 38-3 half-time lead.

Baronio opened the second half scoring. His second try was the only score of the third quarter. The tight play came to an end and with it Selknam added three further tries. First, though, Franco Guidice latched on to a pass from Matías Garafulic and ran in from the interception.

Selknam did not concede further points.Instead, the Chilean team scored through Bautista Stavile, Rodrigo Fernández and Albornoz. Inside center Santiago Videla finished with 8 goals out of 10.
