ATL signs All-American scrumhalf Ryan Rees

Rugby ATL will have two of the USA’s brightest young scrumhalves in 2021 with the addition of Ryan Rees to their Major League Rugby roster. The 23-year-old will compete for game time with incumbent starter Duncan van Schalkwyk and South African arrival Rowan Gouws.

Rees caught the eye at the 2018 World Rugby combine and scored a try for the Americas Selects in their win over the Glendale Raptors. It wasn’t until recently, however, that he committed to MLR with the Austin, Texas, native selected in Friday’s supplementary draft.

A Rudy Scholz nominee as one of the nation’s best college players in 2020, Rees earned Collegiate All-American honors while playing for the Life Running Eagles in both 2018 and 2019. Older brother Alex, a flyhalf, made one appearance for the Gilgronis during the shortened 2020 campaign.
