Utah signs Namibia flyhalf Cliven Loubser

The Utah Warriors have announced the signing of Namibia flyhalf Cliven Loubser for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. A starting player for the Welwitschias at Rugby World Cup 2019, he arrives having most recently played for Yorkshire Carnegie (now Leeds Tykes) in the RFU Championship.

Loubser, 23, made his test debut in 2017 after impressing in two consecutive Junior World Trophy tournaments. He has been an automatic selection in the No10 shirt since, winning 17 caps with 15 starts. An accomplished goal kicker, only three players have scored more than Loubser’s 169 points for Namibia.

Utah how have three international options at flyhalf with Germany’s Hagen Schulte returning and Samoa’s Rodney Iona a previously confirmed new arrival. Iona is also comfortable at inside center while Loubser has played fullback on occasion.

There are now four members of Namibia’s World Cup team signed to play in MLR this season. Loubser’s halfback partner Damian Stevens has joined NOLA, flanker Wian Conradie with expansion side Dallas, and No8 Adriaan Booysen is a returning player for Houston.
