Olímpia Lions draft six Argentine players for SLAR

The identities of six Olímpia Lions players are now known. The Paraguayan professional rugby team will be back for the second year of the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR). The six players are all from Argentina. They were drafted by the Guaraní team and more are to follow.

The six drafted players are hooker Axel Zapata, prop Lucas Favre, second-rower Carlos Repetto, flanker Lucas Santa Cruz, scrum-half Ignacio Inchauspe, and fly half Martín Roger. Zapata is the one returning player. He featured for the Olímpia Lions in the 2020 season.

The complete details of the SLAR players draft are yet to be released. Thus far sixteen players have been confirmed as drafted from Argentina. The first ten joined Los Cafeteros Pro and the aforementioned six players will play for the Olímpia Lions.

Five of the six drafted players have played for the Argentina XV. Favre started in the wins over Chile and Brazil in the 2020 South American 4 Nations. Carlos Repetto is the only drafted player to not have played for the Argentina XV.

Four of the drafted players count as transfers. That is to say that they featured in the 2020 SLAR for another team. Favre, Inchauspe, Repetto and Santa Cruz played for Los Ceibos in 2020.

Another player rumored to be joined the Olímpia Lions is second-rower Manuel Bernstein. He played for Argentina at the 2019 Junior World Championship and for the Argentina XV against Uruguay later that year.
