Lions hooker Pieter Jansen signs for Free Jacks

The New England Free Jacks have announced the signing of 25-year-old hooker Pieter Jansen on a contract through the 2022 Major League Rugby season. He arrives from the Golden Lions in South Africa, where he has been part of the senior provincial squad since 2016.

Jansen is the most accomplished to date of the three young South African front rowers who have now signed for the Free Jacks. He made his Currie Cup debut in 2017 and graduated to Super Rugby honors in 2019. This past season Jansen was first choice during the Currie Cup and started four Super Rugby games.

The new front rowers all lined up for different South African provinces, with loosehead prop Xandré Vos coming from the Kings and tighthead Erich de Jager from the Cheetahs. Jansen replaces Sean McNulty on the Free Jacks roster, the former Ireland u20 cap moving to another MLR club yet to be revealed.
