Jaguares crush Uruguay in Montevideo

The Jaguares had no trouble defeating a badly outgunned Uruguay side in Montevideo on Thursday evening. The finals core read 61-0 in favor of the Super Rugby franchise, Los Teros failing to tally even a single point. Of some consolation to the Uruguayan Rugby Union was the strong attendance figure of 10,000 at the newly renovated Estadio Charrúa.

It took nearly 20 minutes for Argentina to break through via Rodrigo Bruni, but once the first cracks appeared it wasn’t long before the floodgates opened. They would score four more tries before the break with hooker Julián Montoya grabbing a double and singles going to Matías Moroni and Juan Manuel Leguizamón. Joaquin Díaz Bonilla and Santiago González Iglesias combined to convert all five for a halftime score of 35-0.

The second half was a stop-start affair as replacements streamed into the match. Four tries would come through Bautista Delguy, Matías Orlando, Ignacio Mendy, and Gaspar Baldunciel. Amidst the chaos Los Teros could do little, and coach Esteban Meneses will be bitterly disappointed with the scoreline.

Uruguay have precious little time to right the ship ahead of the Americas Rugby Championship opener against Canada on February 2. Los Jaguares will take the comfortable win and continue to sharpen their tools with the Super Rugby season set to kick off on February 16 against the Lions.
