Colombia March on in Rugby World Cup Qualifying

Colombia march on in Rugby World Cup qualifying. Los Tucanes 35-10 win over Venezuela sets up a Rugby World Cup repechage qualifier against Mexico in the next round.

For Los Tucanes the result was expected. Getting there, though, was by no means easy. It took a lot of concentration and discipline. First up against Ecuador the Colombians were untroubled, winning 75-5Against Peru mid-week Los Tucanes enjoyed a dominate opening half to win 41-14.

Completing the campaign against eastern neighbors, Venezuela confirms Colombia are the fifth best rugby country in South America. The fourth best is Paraguay, but in order to face Los Yácares the Colombians must first see-off Mexico.

Las Serpientes won the Rugby America North Championship, defeating Guyana in the final. The level of both competitions will now become clearer as Rugby Americas North vs Sudamérica Rugby ‘B’ will face-off.

Inspirational leader Sebastián Mejia will need to lift his team if they are to advance to face Paraguay. The No 8 from Medellin had an outstanding South American B Championship to further boost his reputation as being the Todd Clever of Colombia. Like the Californian in the USA, Mejia has been at the forefront of Colombian rugby for a number of years.
