Argentina’s number two hooker, Julián Montoya has extended his contract with the UAR for two additional years which sees him now under contract to play Super Rugby and be available for international duty at all times until December 31 2017.
The 22-year-old acted as deputy to Agustín Creevy at the Rugby World Cup, coming off the bench against New Zealand, Georgia, Tonga, Ireland and Australia and starting against Namibia and South Africa. The 102kg front-rower crossed for tries against Tonga and Namibia.
His rapid rise to the senior squad came with the appointment of Daniel Hourcade to replace Santiago Phelan in October 2013. Hourcade first used Montoya in 2014 against Uruguay, less than a year after he was playing at the World Rugby Junior World Championship.
Montoya was selected ahead of Santiago Iglesias Valdez and veteran Eusebiu Guiñazú to be second-choice to Creevy and the time and resources invested in him are set to see him further develop even further. Both he and Creevy could play at the next World Cup.
In joining the Argentine Super Rugby franchise and Cubelli departing for the Brumbies the player roster has a total of 30 athletes at present. More are to join with scrumhalf Felipe Ezcurra tipped to be the next.
