Matías Agüero Joins Leicester Tigers

Italian international prop Matías Agüero is to become the third Argentine at the Leicester Tigers. The 34-year-old has signed until the end of the season for the Aviva Premiership side to replace Azzurri teammate Michele Rizzo, out for the season with a serious knee injury. Now into the twilight of his career, the Buenos Aires native joins Leicester from Zebre whom he played for from 2012-2015.

This will be Agüero’s second stint in the Premiership, having previously spent three seasons with Saracens from 2007-2010. He joins fellow Argentines Marcos Ayerza and Gonzalo Camacho at the club, as well as Italian international hooker Leonardo Ghiraldini and two younger Italian props, Riccardo Brugnara and Tiziano Pasquali.

The move draws into question the immediate status of Canadian prop Djustice Sears-Duru, who joined Leicester on a one-month trial contract three weeks ago. Sears-Duru has yet to make a senior appearance for Tigers, but could still be seen as a long-term project after the arrival of Agüero.
