Peñarol Upset Dogos in Argentina to Move to Top Spot

Peñarol won the dual of the champions on Saturday. The Uruguayans completed a tight 19-17 victory over Los Dogos, doing so with a late try. The result lifts Peñarol to top spot of Super Rugby Americas. They overtake Los Pampas whom they will face in Montevideo in the final round. Both teams and Los Dogos are assured of places in the Semi Finals. The result in Córdoba combined with Selknam’s win over Yacare earlier on in the day, means three teams are in the hunt for the one remaining Semi Final spot.

MATCH NOTES
  • The Uruguayans outscored the home side by three tries to two.
  • Peñarol hooker Joaquín Myszka scored the opening try and the only points of the first quarter.
  • Lautaro Cipriani opened Los Dogos’ scoring at the start of the second quarter. Juan Bautista Baronio converted to give his side the lead.
  • Peñarol regained the lead on 33 minutes thanks to a try to Carlos Deus.
  • Franco Rossetto scored next. His try came late in the third quarter. Baronio converted for a 14-12 lead.
  • Baronio extended the lead with a penalty on 66 minutes. Los Dogos then fumbled opportunities to put the result beyond doubt. Two attacking raids resulted in no points.
  • Peñarol recovered to score three minutes from full-time through teenage replacement hooker Sebastian Pérez. Etcheverry converted to give Peñarol a two point lead.
  • Both teams are officially now in the Semi Finals; however, neither side knows who they will play against nor with ether it will be at home or on the road. If Peñarol win vs Los Pampas next weekend then they will play their Semi Final at home. Los Dogos’ need a win and also other results to go in their favor.
