Chilean President José Antonio Kast hosts delegation of World Rugby leaders

Chilean President José Antonio Kast hosted an official delegation of World Rugby leaders at the Palacio de La Moneda on October 02. The high-level institutional gathering marked the official launch of the 2026 World Rugby Junior Challenger. This newly established tournament is taking place across Santiago from October 02 to October 17, 2026.

The World Rugby u20 event serves as a clear testament to the explosive growth rugby is experiencing across Chile. Driven by continuous state backing, strategic grassroots infrastructure investments, and the rising popularity of the sport, the oval ball has successfully captured the imagination of the Chilean public. Local enthusiasm has reached an all-time high as the country solidifies its identity as a prominent rugby nation.

To support its ascent, Chile is investing in the modernization of its infrastructure, centered around the multi-stage expansion of the Centro de Alto Rendimiento de Rugby (CARR) located inside Parque Mahuida in La Reina, Santiago. Backed by an investment of nearly $1.5 billion Chilean pesos from the regional government, the high-performance training hub has recently completed key upgrades to meet World Rugby standards, featuring a high-end certified synthetic turf pitch, a newly erected Andes grandstand, and a professional sports lighting system.

The development of the facilities is ongoing. Upcoming construction phases are set to expand the stadium’s total capacity from 1,200 to 5,000 spectators via a new Pacific grandstand, alongside a second full-sized pitch and an ambitious four-story high-performance building that will house state-of-the-art training facilities, technical staff headquarters, broadcast cabins, and athlete dining halls.

This upward trajectory is strongly anchored by the achievements of the men’s senior national team, Los Cóndores. After making a historic debut at the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France, Chile proved their rise was no fluke by emphatically securing their ticket to compete at the upcoming 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.

Chile are interested in longterm rugby sustainability. This has fueled domestic professional ambitions, making the establishment of a second Chilean professional franchise to join Selknam in Super Rugby Americas (SRA) far more than just a distant dream.

The structural ascent of Chilean rugby is taking place while soccer has been experiencing disappointments. The country’s traditionally dominant sport suffered a major psychological blow when the national soccer team failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This setback has allowed rugby to step into the vacuum, commanding broader media attention and attracting corporate sponsors eager to back a winning, globally competitive project.

Looking further into the future, the meeting at the presidential palace also reinforced massive continental ambitions. World Rugby executives and local leaders discussed the ongoing regional push to bring rugby’s biggest spectacle back to the continent, emphasizing that Chile is an active, structural partner in the Argentine bid to host the 2035 Men’s Rugby World Cup.
