Benjamín Urdapilleta breaks all-time Top 14 point scoring record

Benjamín Urdapilleta has officially cemented his legacy in French rugby history, becoming the all-time leading points scorer of the modern Top 14 era.

At 40 years old, the veteran Argentine fly-half achieved the historic milestone during the first half of Perpignan’s Round 5 match against Racing 92 in the 2026/27 season. Having finished the previous season agonizingly close—just a single point away from tying the record—Urdapilleta successfully fired over 8 points early in the game to claim the crown.

The performance brought his career tally to 2,619 points, officially surpassing the previous modern-era record of 2,612 points held by Castres icon Romain Teulet, who established his mark between 2001 and 2014.

Urdapilleta’s feat cements him as the most prolific scorer since the single-division Top 14 format was established in 2001. However, he remains far from the absolute historical record of 3,015 points held by Richard Dourthe. Dourthe’s towering record was built between 1990 and 2008, spanning the pre-professionalism era (prior to 1995) and older tournament structures like the Top 16 before the modern Top 14 took shape.

ROOTS IN BUENOS AIRES AND THE PUMA LEGACY

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Urdapilleta began his rugby journey in the amateur ranks with Club Universitario de Buenos Aires (CUBA) before making his international debut for Los Pumas in 2008. The skilled playmaker went on to earn 16 caps for the Argentine national team, representing his country on the sport’s biggest stage at both the 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cups. His elite tactical kicking and leadership traits made him a highly dependable asset on the international circuit whenever called upon to wear the famous sky-blue and white jersey.

Urdapilleta’s professional club career blossomed when he moved to Europe, initially joining English club Harlequins in 2010 before moving to France to play for Oyonnax in 2012. It was his subsequent eight-season tenure with Castres that truly defined his status as a Top 14 legend, where he famously orchestrated the team’s triumph to lift the Bouclier de Brennus in 2018. After a highly successful run with Castres, the veteran fly-half brought his immense experience to Perpignan in 2023, where he has continued to defy age and perform at the highest level.
