Rugby Australia has officially confirmed that the Wallabies will play against Argentina in Townsville in 2027. The test match was locked in as part of a long-term partnership with the Queensland Government, ensuring elite international rugby returns to the region outside of major tournaments. The match will be played as part of the 2027 Rugby Championship at the Queensland Country Bank Stadium.
The fixture will be played several months before Rugby World Cup 2027. Townsville will host four pool-stage matches. The first will be on Sunday, 3 October 2027, with a Pool B clash between Georgia and Romania. The following weekend, sees Chile vs Hong Kong in a Pool A match on Saturday, 9 October 2027.
The city will then host a double-header weekend of international rugby, starting on Friday, 15 October 2027, when Tonga plays Zimbabwe in Pool F. Townsville’s World Cup schedule wraps up the very next day, Saturday, 16 October 2027, with a Pool C match between Spain and Canada.
In addition to having plenty to look forward to at Rugby World Cup 2027, Townsville rugby can look forward to even more action in the future, as the deal also guarantees the Wallabies will return to the city to face South Africa in 2028, Georgia in 2029 and Argentina again in 2030.
No other specific match fixtures for the 2027 Rugby Championship have been announced by SANZAAR. The matchup between Argentina and Argentina in Townsville remains the only specific game from the tournament calendar officially locked in so far.
Townsville previously played host to Australia vs Argentina in 2021 and 2025. Both matches ended in victories for the locals. Both were Rugby Championship fixtures while the 2030 fixture is to be in the form of a tour with the Rugby Championship canceled again so as to enable New Zealand to host South Africa in the Greatest Rivalry.
The 2027 and 2030 fixtures add to the test matches that Los Pumas will play soon against Australia—on August 29 in Jujuy and September 5 in Mendoza—before facing the Wallabies again in Townsville for what will be the 2027 Rugby Championship.
