Uruguay Include New Blood on Roster for Nations Cup

Uruguay has included new blood on its roster for the Nations Cup. The selection means Manuel Leindekar will not lead Uruguay next month. Los Teros will play three home matches at the Estadio Charrúa in Montevideo, taking-on Georgia, Romania and Hong Kong over consecutive weekends.

New blood includes the uncapped Máximo Lamelas. He is the son of Diego Lamelas who played for Uruguay at Rugby World Cups 1999 and 2003. Máximo Lamelas is one of fifteen uncapped players on the 33-man Uruguayan roster for July.

NOT SELECTED

Uruguay’s roster comes without regulars from Rugby World Cup 2023 and players who are positioned as premier Uruguayan rugby names.

Part of the explanation comes down to injuries. Hookers Germán Kessler (knee) and Guillermo Pujadas (spinal) are both out following recent surgeries. Props Ignacio Péculo (cervical) and Francisco Suárez (shoulder) are also sidelined for up to six and eight months respectively.

Another factor is the World Rugby u20 Championship. The core of the U20 youth team (Los Teritos) is tied up with their own World Rugby Championship concurrently which means the senior squad has integrated a hybrid group of veterans and amateur club standouts — such as Lucas Porcelli, Mateo Sosa, and Alfonso Vidal.

The quest to build depth for Rugby World Cup 2027 and the long professional European club season also combine for missing names. Examples include Manuel Leindekar, Santiago Arata, Santiago Civetta, Carlos Deus, Felipe Etcheverry, Santiago Álvarez, Bautista Basso, Baltazar Amaya and Andrés Vilaseca.
