Colombia Strike Double Gold at Central American & Caribbean Games

Colombia enojyed an outstanding campaign at the XXIV Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe in San Salvador, El Salvador. Colombia won Gold in both the Men’s and Women’s Rugby Sevens events at the  2023 Central American & Caribbean Games.

Jhon Arley Urrutia was the hero for Los Tucanes. He scored a hat-trick in the Men’s Final against Jamaica. Colombia won the final 28-7. Las Tucanes won the Women’s Final 17-7 against Mexico. The Colombian Women ran in three unconverted tries with Valentina Tapias, Leidy Soto and Zuleyma Orobio all touching down in the try zone.

The Gold medals in San Salvador were a repeat of Colombia also winning Gold in both the Men’s and Women’s events at the 2018 Central American & Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, Colombia as well as in Veracruz, Mexico four years earlier.

Las Tucanes overcame Costa Rica, and Venezuela from Sudamericas Rugby and Jamaica, Mexico, and Trinidad and Tobago from Rugby Americas North. The Colombians did so by scoring thirty tries in their seven matches.

The Colombian men won all eight of their matches. Jhon Arley Urrutia was the Man of the tournament with eight tries scored. Jamaica settled for Silver while Mexico claimed Bronze Medal by defeating Venezuela 26-7.
