Silver for Women’s Eagles at World Sevens Series finale

The Women’s Eagles wrapped up their 2022-23 World Sevens Series campaign with a Silver finish in Toulouse. First half tries from Naya Tapper and Kristi Kirshe saw the USA running out to a 14-nil lead, but New Zealand came back with fire in the second half with a Stacey Waaka double sealing another victory for the overall series winners.

It was the second Silver and sixth podium finish of the campaign for the USA, who can now look towards next season and ultimately the Olympic Games having already secured automatic qualification. The Eagles finished 3rd on the overall season’s rankings behind New Zealand and Australia, with Ireland also securing their place at Paris 2024 along with hosts France.

Canada would finish the tournament in 10th spot after falling to Spain in their only action of the day, a reversal of their final overall standings. The difference was only one point though the Leonas outscored the Canadians three tries to two. Rugby Canada’s home turf at Starlight Stadium in Langford will host the Olympic Qualifiers in August.

Brazil will also need to earn their spot in Paris after ending the campaign in 11th spot overall, the lowest ranking of the core teams. As Yaras finished at the bottom of the table in Toulouse after a disappointing loss to Poland on Day Three.
