Mackenzie Carson to switch from Canada to England

Mackenzie Carson will soon be a dual-international. The 24-year-old front rower from Abbotsford, BC, will trade the Maple Leafs for the Red Roses when she starts for England against Scotland on Saturday. She makes the switch using the Union Transfer regulation, qualifying through her English mother.

A standout for UBC and Canada’s age-grade programs, Carson ironically debuted for Canada against England in 2018 and then played in two tests against the USA in 2019. She was part of Canada’s extended training group last July but did not ultimately travel to New Zealand for the World Cup.

Notably Carson’s Canadian selections were as a hooker, and she has only recently made the switch to loosehead prop. Currently at Saracens, she previously suited up for Bristol Bears.

Carson spoke to Sky Sports about the decision: “Obviously my life is here in England now, and you don’t really turn down one of the best teams in the world. I think any opportunity to play international rugby is an incredible one, so for me it was a no-brainer.”
