Uruguay stun Fiji, Canada beat Australia in Vancouver

Uruguay earned another historic result on the World Sevens Series as they defeated Fiji for the first time on Day One in Vancouver. Argentina lead in Pool B, the USA are in the Quarter Final hunt, and Canada wrapped up their day with an impressive win over Australia.

Los Teros did not enjoy their first run-out against Great Britain, with Max McFarland scoring a hat-trick in the blowout defeat. The Fiji match was a different story, with a second half try from Tomás Etcheverry proving the game-winner. It follows last weekend’s famous victory over South Africa.

The Eagles had a miserable opener against New Zealand, conceding eight tries while scoring none. They would bounce back with a slender victory over Samoa, with a pair of Stephen Tomasin conversions ultimately the difference. Tomasin was celebrating his 50th World Sevens Series event.

Argentina’s strong form continued with two wins to start their tournament. Japan were the first victims in convincing fashion, and then Luciano González Rizzoni’s double led the Pumas to a 21-nil halftime lead against France that they would not relinquish.

Chile were well beaten in both of their matches. Three tries from Darby Lancaster led Australia past the Cóndores, and three players had two tries each for Ireland in a one-sided affair.

Canada gave the home fans something to cheer for to end the day. They had earlier been blown out by Ireland. Against Australia the Canadians outscored their guests five tries to two, including a brace for Matt Percillier. Alex Russell, Kalin Sager, and Thomas Isherwood scores each brought the crowd to their feet.

Up first on Day Two is Uruguay, who face Kenya, followed soon after by Argentina versus South Africa. The USA can clinch a spot in the Quarter Finals by defeating Spain, and Canada can do likewise with a win over Chile. A full fixtures list can be seen here.
