Argentina will have a new professional rugby team. The country’s second largest city will be home to a new team to compete in the rebranded Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR). Córdoba will give Argentina two teams in the 2023 Super Rugby Americas.
The team’s name is yet to be confirmed. One possibility is Ceibos. That was the name used for Argentina’s first SLAR participant. The team competed in SLAR 2020 while Los Jaguares XV did so in SLAR 2021 and SLAR 2022.
ARN does understand that the new team will not be a return to Ceibos. A more likely name circulating is Dogos XV. Dogos is the name of Córdoba’s provincial rugby team. The name refers to Dogo Argentino, a breed of dog from Argentina.
Also unconfirmed is the player roster. The names are yet to be public, though there was training today at Córdoba Athletic with members of the roster for Super Rugby Americas 2023.
The Córdoba team is to be coached by Nicolás Galatro, Diego Ghiglione and Stefano Ambrosio. Galatro arrives as the head coach after having coached Los Cafeteros Pro in SLAR 2022. The Colombian team will not compete in Super Rugby Americas 2023. A lifeline for Colombians exists in the form of opportunities to play for the U.S team, Raptors. Canada is also to compete in the expanded league.
An official league launch is forthcoming from Sudamérica Rugby. Córdoba, will join the two entrants from North America in addition to the SLAR 2022 competitors Peñarol (Uruguay), Cobras (Brazil), Olímpia Lions (Paraguay), Selknam (Chile), and Los Jaguares XV (Argentina).
