Córdoba win tight match against Brazil

Córdoba won a tight battle against Brazil on Wednesday. The teams met in what was the second fixture for both teams in the Cross Border in Asunción, Paraguay. Replacement Mauricio Kember landed a penalty two minutes from full-time to give Córdoba a three point lead and, ultimately, the victory.

The Estádio Héroes de Curupayti was the setting for the competitive match. It started with an Argentine try; Julián Quetglas touched down in the 4th minute. Quetglas was named on ARN’s SLAR All-Star team for 2022. His impressive season was for the Olímpia Lions, Paraguay’s professional rugby team.

Quetglas’ try was the only first-half try. The remaining points were all from kicks at goal. Los Dogos fly half Gaspar Russo converted the try and added a penalty. Brazil fly half, Lucas Tanquez kicked two penalties.

The second half also began well for Los Dogos. Hooker Conrado Iglesias scored from an attacking lineout. Brazil responded through replacement hooker Endy Willian Pinheiro. His 60th minute score was from a lineout and rolling maul.

Following a period of no scoring, Córdoba and Brazil again exchanged tries. Federico Albrisi scored in thr try zone for the Argentine side while Ariel Rodrigues responded for Brazil two minutes later. Kember broke the deadlock with a penalty to kake it a 23-20 win for Córdoba.

Los Dogos and Brazil will both play again on Saturday. Córdoba will conclude the cross border against Argentina provincial rivals Tucumán while Brazil will face Paraguay. With it being Paraguay XV vs Brazil XV the match will be upcapped.
