Nicolás Sánchez completes transfer from Stade Français to Brive

Nicolás Sánchez has completed a transfer from Stade Français to Brive. The Argentine fly half will play for Brive for the remainder of the 2022-2023 Top 14 season. The move comes with Brive in great need of turning their season around to avoid relegation.

Brive will be the fourth Top 14 club for Sánchez. He played for Bordeaux (2011-2014), Toulon (2014-2015) and Stade Français (2018-2022). His move to Stade Français saw him returning to France from Super Rugby. He played three seasons for Los Jaguares (2016-2018).

Sánchez played in Rugby World Cups 2011, 2015 and 2019. He was the starting fly half in the second of these tournaments. In the third he began as the first choice no 10, only to be overtaken by Benjamín Urdapilleta during the tournament itself. Sánchez and Urdapilleta both played for Argentina in 2022 but Gloucester fullback Santiago Carreras is the proffered starter.

Sánchez was a replacement in the final minutes for Argentina against Scotland this past Saturday. He earned his 95th cap. No Puma has ever reached 100 caps. Agustín Creevy is ahead of Sánchez on 97. Former Stade Français flanker Pablo Matera is catching up both fast. He has 91 caps.

After 10 rounds of the Top 14 season Brive has a 2-8 record. The club is in bottom position on 13 points. Perpignan is in 13th on 14 points and Pau is in 12th on 19 points.

Brive is home to two other Pumas – second-rower Lucas Paulos and N8 Rodrigo Bruni. Sánchez has played with both for Argentina. Uncapped Axel Muller is also at the club as is Colombian giant Andrés Zafra.
