Uruguay Hit Hard With Scrum-half Crisis for November Internationals

Uruguay has been hit hard. Los Teros will be without two leading names, both of whom play in the same position. In short, Uruguay now has a scrum-half crisis for the start of the upcoming November Internationals.

Santiago Arata was injured on Saturday. The country’s best player left the field of play when playing for Castres against Clermont in the French Top 14. His injury has since been confirmed as a ruptured ligament to his right thumb. He will undergo surgery today and, as a minimum, will miss the opening round of the November Internationals.

Arata has been in sensational form for Castres. He has been named as the team’s MVP in four matches thus far in the Top 14 season.

The loss of Arata is the second for Los Teros for November. The roster for the tour did not include the name of Agustín Ormaechea. The veteran of RWCs 2015 and 2019 was left out not on form but based on injury. Ormaechea is sidelined with a knee injury.

The URU are yet to name a replacement scrum-half for the November Internationals. The original roster did not include Oramechea due to the aforementioned injury. The scrum-half were Santiago Álvarez (Carrasco Polo) Santiago Arata (Castres, FR) and Tomás Inciarte (Old Christians). Inciarte is now favored to be the starting scrum-half for Uruguay’s test match against Georgia in Tbilisi on November 6.

Arata is out of the match against Georgia. Should he be given the green light then he will be able to play for Uruguay against Romania and Tonga in Bucharest over subsequent weekends.
