Chile win series against Brazil in Temuco

Chile continued preparations for Rugby World Cup 2023 on Saturday. Los Cóndores completed a 28-9 win over Brazil in Temuco. The match as the second of two between the Chile XV and the Brazil XV. The Chileans won both to complete a series win.

Brazil had a strong start to the contest. Os Tupis put together phases and were able to gain good ground up field. They were rewarded with shots at goal that gave them both good possession and opportunities to kick for points. As a result Brazil was 6-0 early on.

Chile were behind on the scoresheet but were causing damage around the field. Chile was able to frustrate Brazil’s lineup and scrum and also compete well at the breakdown. The toll that this had would become evident later on in the match.

The pressure that Chile was able to put on Brazil did not result in easy points; Chile was made to work hard for their first half points. Los Cóndores response to Brazil’s six-point-lead came late in the first half. Young N8 Joaquín Milesi scored from an attacking scrum. The conversion put Chile one point ahead at the interval.

Brazil had also started well in the first match of the series. In that match Chile had a much better second half than did Os Tupis. A similar scenario unfolded in Temuco. Brazil scored the opening points; a kick gave them a 9-7 lead. The remaining points were all Chilean.

Chile crafted their tries well. Phase play and penalties turned into good possession and opportunities for tries. Pablo Lemoine’s use of the replacements was also pivotal. Vicente Tredinck scored two tries as an impact player. He first came from a solid try assist from Matías Garafulic.

When Chile backed-up their second try with their third the result was seemingly confirmed. On the back of an attacking lineout to maul, scrum-half Marcelo Torrealba spotted the Brazilian defense sliding to the right. He took the opportunity to dart over to score.

Brazil’s discipline made it tough for them to find a way back. Meanwhile, Chile were calm. With the forwards having gotten Chile deep in Brazil’s 22, the backs spun the ball wide. Tredinck went through a half gap to touch the ball down in the try zone. Santiago Videla continued his fine year to add the conversion from wide.

Chile’s November Internationals are presently being finalized. Plans are for two matches in Europe against RWC 2023 teams. The tour comes with Chile having solidified itself as one of rugby’s most improved test teams.

Brazil leave southern Chile with a long trip ahead of them. Their destination is Barranquilla on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. Brazil will play two test matches as part of the South American Tri Nations. Brazil will face Paraguay on Wednesday, August 24 and Colombia on Sunday, August 28.
