Canada names rosters for Commonwealth Games 7s

Rugby Canada has named the Men’s and Women’s sevens rosters for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. The event is hosted by Birmingham, England, but the rugby will take place in nearby Coventry from July 29 to 31.

Matthew Oworu, Brock Webster, and Cooper Coats switch back to the sevens program after appearing in the tests against Belgium and Spain. Ciaran Breen is a notable inclusion having spent several months in France with Carcassonne’s academy side.

Josiah Morra returns from injury to add speed and elusiveness, while Lockie Kratz continues his sabbatical from Major League Rugby’s NOLA Gold. Phil Berna continues as captain. The men’s side were knocked out in the pool stage in 2018.

Leading the women’s roster will be co-captains Olivia Apps and Breanne Nicholas, who join Bianca Farella as the three returning players from 2018. On that occasion Canada narrowly missed out on a medal after losing to England in the Bronze Final.

Pamphinette Buisa and Renee Gonzalez recently played with the XVs side in the Pacific Four tournament in New Zealand. Teenage flyer Krissy Scurfield is included and there is a return for Chloe Daniels from injury. UBC winger Piper Logan is set to make her international debut.

The tournament will be broadcast on the CBC Sports website.
