Shawn Pittman out as Utah Warriors Head Coach

The axe has fallen on another Major League Rugby Head Coach. Shawn Pittman has been relieved of his duties at the Utah Warriors. General Manager and Director of Rugby Brandon Sparks will take over the lead role for the remainder of the season while a search for a permanent replacement begins.

Pittman suffers the same fate of Old Glory’s Andrew Douglas and comes after the Warriors posted a 2-6 record in the first half of the season including three consecutive defeats at home. The 34-year-old was named MLR Coach of the Year in 2021 after leading Utah to a Western Conference Final.

After winning 30 caps at prop for the Eagles and selection to Rugby World Cup 2011, Pittman served as an Assistant Coach for the USA under Gary Gold at RWC 2019. He joined the Warriors as an assistant under Chris Latham in 2020 and stepped up to Head Coach when Latham abruptly departed prior to the 2021 season. Pittman’s overall record while in charge, including the playoffs, was 12 wins and 13 defeats.
