Eagles star for Oxford in Varsity Match

USA Eagles trio Eric Fry, Andrew Durutalo, and Nick Civetta helped lead Oxford University to victory over Cambridge in the Varsity Match at Twickenham on Saturday. Civetta was a try-scorer for the Dark Blues as they completed the 21-17 win to follow up their 2021 triumph at Welford Road.

Cambridge were forced to play much of the match with only 14 men after second row Charlie Friend was sent off for stamping on the head of Civetta in the first half. Durutalo was a force with ball in hand, playing at the back of the scrum, and Eric Fry anchored a dominant Oxford scrum.

Canadian age-grade international Piers von Dadelszen started at lock for the winners, while former national u20 flyhalf Ben Scher was a travelling reserve though he did not ultimately dress for the match. Last year’s Old Glory DC captain Mungo Mason was wearing the No7 shirt and one time Ontario Arrows hooker Alex Post, a Hong Kong international, was also a starter for Oxford.

It’s the second successful ‘Blue’ for Durutalo, who also played in last year’s victory. With Civetta now set to return to Rugby New York for the remainder of the Major League Rugby season, it remains to be seen if Durutalo takes the field for the Seattle Seawolves.
