San Diego Legion to play home games in Las Vegas in 2021

The San Diego Legion have confirmed a shock move to Las Vegas for the 2021 Major League Rugby season. An official announcement on social media noted that due to the impact of COVID-19 in Southern California, the team will not be able to play at their home venue of Torero Stadium.

It’s unclear which venue the team will be based at, but reports indicate the team will also train in Nevada during the season. San Diego played one match at Sam Boyd Stadium during the special Vegas Weekend in February that saw eight teams competing in two double-headers.

The news is a second major adjustment for MLR over the past week. Expansion side Dallas announced they would be delaying entry to 2022 last week. Meanwhile there is ongoing speculation that the Toronto Arrows will be forced to play south of the border for at least part of the season.

An updated 2021 schedule is expected to be released shortly though it could simply be the next of what could be a series of revisions forced by the ongoing pandemic. On a positive note all 12 remaining teams are moving forward with plans to compete this season with training camps scheduled to begin formally in early February.
