Mexico eyeing a Major League Rugby future

Mexico is eyeing a future in Major League Rugby. Plans for the coming decade include a Mexican team in the USA-based competition. Such a move would see Mexico joining professional rugby for the first time and see the MLR expanded to a third North American country.

The plans were confirmed during the recent annual report from Rugby Mexico president Francisco Echeguren. An MLR team is first on the list, with other targets including technical centers, the expansion of rugby fields across the country, and a women’s national XV-a-side team.

The technical centers will be Mexico’s equivalent of the high performance centers in Argentina. In the Mexican case the players will not live there and will be unpaid. The plans were for the centers to open in 2020. Instead, they will open in 2021 in the cities of Monterrey, Guadalajara and Mexico City.

Los Serpientes, Mexico’s men’s national team, compete annually in the Rugby Americas North championship. They qualified for the Americas Rugby Challenge in both 2018 and 2019, finishing 3rd and 2nd respectively, and are currently ranked 43rd in the world and 8th in the Americas.
