COVID-19 hits Pumas Rugby Championship preparations

Six Argentine players officially have COVID-19. They are all players based in Argentina who were on Mario Ledesma’s list to prepare for the Rugby Championship. N8 Javier Ortega Desio tested positive on Sunday and five others did so on Monday and Tuesday.

The UAR tested all players preparing for the Rugby Championship in Buenos Aires. This week marks the third week of the preparations. It has now been hit by the unfortunate news of a potential outbreak within the camp.

The five players who tested positive on Monday and Tuesday have entered isolation. They will remain there for 14 days.  The UAR’s medical team will oversee the five players who are flanker Tomás Lezana, winger Santiago Carreras, center Santiago Chocobares, hooker José Luis González, and prop Federico Wegrzyn.

The Rugby Championship is expected to be played in November and December. Official dates and locations are yet to be finalized, although it is understood that all matches will be played in New Zealand.

All traveling players and staff members will be required to enter 14 day quarantine upon arrival in New Zealand. Questions remain as to whether those diagnosed with COVID-19 will be able to participate or not in the tournament.
