Emergency Plan for Australia-based Rugby Championship

The damaging effects of COVID-19 have placed grave doubt on the ability for the 2020 Rugby Championship to be played. The tournament is scheduled to begin in August, though there is no hope of that possibility being realized.

Measures from all four countries mean travel is complicated. Examples include a 15-day mandatory quarantine on arrival in Australia and New Zealand and suspended flights in Argentina until September.

The cancellation of the Super Rugby season has meant tremendous financial losses for the unions, a problem that has been added to by the suspension of the July Internationals. This leaves the Rugby Championship as the last possible opportunity for home games in 2020.

SANZAAR’s emergency plans will alleviate the damage, but the tournament will not be normal. The best case scenario, according to SANZAAR, at this stage is for the tournament to be played in one country: Australia.

The emergency plans being drafted are for Australia to host the competition in October and November. Before it can be finalized the four unions require permission from their local authorities. The same is true for domestic rugby activities.
