Full Match – Brazil vs Uruguay 2016

Brazil hosted Uruguay in the second round of the inaugural Americas Rugby Championship (ARC) in 2016. The teams met in São Paulo and competed in an entertaining 33-29 match.

Brazil invested heavily in players for the competition. This saw a lot of investment into eligibile players. This helped elevate the level of play during the RWC 2015-2019 cycle.

Uruguay was coming off RWC 2015. This saw the bulk of the side unchanged in the 2016 ARC. It did, however, see opportunity for new names. This was evidenced in the bench against Brazil with the likes of Germán Kessler, Ignacio Dotti and Santiago Arata.

The game was a back-an-forth contest. It started with fly half David Harvey kicking an early penalty for the hosts. Rodrigo Silva responded for Los Teros, though Brazil had the better of play early on.

Uruguay eventually found their feet. Yet it took them well into the second-half to claim the lead. Brazil frustrated the Uruguayans who had a tough time despite controlling 80% of firt half possession.

A key factor to the scoring was goal-kicking. There was a contrast between the accuracy of Harvey on the one hand and Silva on the other.
