Ceibos get past tough Selknam in Santiago

Los Ceibos have made a 2-0 start to the inaugural Súper Liga Americana de Rugby (SLAR) season. The Córdoba based franchise were 32-16 winners over Selknam this evening in Santiago del Chile. The Argentine side got the win based on an impressive second-half performance wherein they were tied at 13-13 at half time.

Selknam impressed early to open the scoring via a Patricio Baronio penalty. It was not smooth sailing early, though as Los Ceibos bounced back with Martín Eliás kicking two penalties in the opening half.

The teams also both scored one first half try each. The first to do so was the visiting team with Facundo Cordero finishing off a break from Juan Pablo Zeiss. Selknam’s try came eleven minutes later and saw a penalty try awarded with Cordero yellow carded.

Los Ceibos’ discipline improved in the second half. The opposite unfolded for the Chilean side with three players receiving yellow cards. In the half Los Ceibos scored three tries and Selknam zero. In the period the home side scored three points compared to 19 to Los Ceibos.

Fullback Juan Bautista Daireaux made it two tries from two SLAR matches. His 46th minute effort saw Ceibos reclaiming the lead and his team would remain in command for the duration.

Next to score was Cordero who bagged his second. His try came from an inside feed from replacement scrum-half Ignacio Inchauspe. The same player would also begin the final try. From a quick tap Inchauspe same one player after the next getting his hands on the ball. Numbers saw Tomás Cubilla going over out wide for the bonus point score.

Today’s game was the only SLAR fixture of the weekend. It remains to be seen if there will be games next weekend. In theory Selknam will host the Olímpia Lions on Friday with Corinthians at home to Peñarol on next Saturday in the remaining round three fixture.
