Montevideo Challenger Series: Uruguay Fall to Japan in Epic Final

Japan defeated Uruguay 5-0 in the final of the Montevideo Challenger Series. The outcome means that Japan and Chile are the two countries to have claimed the qualifying places in the next round of the World Sevens Series.

Played on Saturday and Sunday at the Estadio Charrúa, Los Teros 7’s performed far better than at the previous tournament in Viña del Mar, Chile. Yet, the manner of the defeat in the final against Japan will take some getting used to.

Japanese captain Chihito Matsui crossed in what was the 22nd minute of play to score the only points in what was a grueling final.

Before the final there was a full day of matches. Of the competitors from the Americas, Colombia claimed a win over Mexico to claim 13th position. Both Brazil and Paraguay were winless throughout the tournament to finish 15th and 16th respectively.

Chile finished in 4th place. They were beaten 12-7 in the Bronze Final by Hong Kong. The fifth and sixth places went to Germany and Italy respectively.
