Seawolves shut out Crimson Tide in Starfire friendly

The Seattle Seawolves enjoyed their first run-out of 2020 as they coasted to a 55-0 shutout win over the Vancouver Island Crimson Tide at Starfire Stadium on Thursday evening. A 36-0 halftime lead had the defending Major League Rugby champions in cruise control for the second part of the exhibition.

Riekert Hattingh led the way for Seattle with two tries including the first of the evening on a cheeky show-and-go. Tim Metcher followed in short order before two new backs got in on the act. Harry Davies and Ross Neal each finished off attacks for tries on debut.

Before the break there was a penalty try from a dominant scrum followed by Stephan Coetzee’s score on a driving maul as the forwards exerted their dominance. Brock Staller added two conversions with three attempts drifting just wide of their target.

Hattingh was again first to the score sheet in the second half, making the corner with Ben Cima knocking over the extras. Siti Tamaivena came on for his first Seawolves appearance and grabbed a try on the end of a Scott Dean grubber, with a barreling Joey Iosefa run accounting for the final score of the evening.

Seattle will now await the arrival of the Tasman Mako next week in a champion-vs-champion match. The Mitre 10 Cup holders start their American tour in Houston with a match against the SaberCats at AVEVA Stadium on Saturday.
