Changes to Rugby Americas Competitions for 2020

Changes to Rugby Americas competitions for 2020 have been announced. Starting in 2020 the annual Americas Rugby Championship (ARC) will move to be aligned closely with the global rugby calendar and will benefit professional competition both in the Americas and elsewhere.

The 2020 ARC will see the Argentina XV, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Uruguay, and the USA competing in what is the Americas 6 Nations in August and September. The competition began in 2016 and was played in February and March.

Taking place in the former ARC time slot will be the professional rugby competitions Major League Rugby, and the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby. Both competitions will be played in the first half of 2020 before being followed by international competition – the July Internationals, ARC, and November Internationals.

A change to the ARC for 2020 will see Promotion and relegation officially beginning. The bottom placed side will face the champion of the Americas Rugby Challenge (ARCh) in a promotion – relegation play-off with the winner qualifying for the 2021 ARC and the loser for the 2021 ARCh.
