Uruguay Qualify for 2020 World Rugby u20 Trophy

Uruguay have qualified for the 2020 World Rugby u20 Trophy. Los Teritos did so by defeating Chile 29-11 on Saturday in the Sudaméricano u19 Final in Montevideo.

The tournament has been played since 2008. Uruguay were the inaugural champions and since then they have contested the final with Chile. In reaching the final Chile join Uruguay and Argentina in the 2020 Americas Rugby Championship u20s while Brazil’s defeat to Paraguay means they will compete in the Americas Rugby Challenge u20s and Paraguay in the Championship.

Chile had a strong start to the final. Their pack gave them excellent go-forward-ball, from which they gained an 8-0 lead after 11 minutes.

Uruguay recovered from a slow start to take-over the match. Center Matías Garafulic made a break and combined with winger Benjamín Goñi. It meant that Chile were 11-10n ahead late in the opening half.

Los Teritos’ lead came through the goal-kicking of Juan Vargas. He handed five penalties and also converted two tries in a 17-point haul.

In the Bronze Final Paraguay were 22-17 winners over Brazil. The Brazilians started far better before the Paraguayans staged a comeback to finish the match as winners by a five point margin.
