Japan smile as Ireland humble Scotland

Japan can smile now as Ireland humbled Scotland this morning in Yokohama. Following on from Japan’s 30-10 win over Russia the second Pool A match saw Ireland winning 27-3 against Scotland.

The Irish were far better than the Scots, with this applies to all facets of play. It saw Ireland completing a bonus point victory and also meant that Scotland failed to gain any points from the result. This was, thus, a dream result for Japan who seek a first RWC appearance in the Quarter Finals.

Ireland put on a clinical display and got out of it four tries. Crossing were James Ryan, Rory Best, Tadhg Furlong and Andrew Conway though it was South African import, CJ Stander who was named man of the match.

Scotland had nothing to offer in reply to Ireland. The only points scored all match from the Scots would come in the form of a penalty from scrum-half Greig Laidlaw.

With the game still early both Ryan and Best had scored tries. They would cross in the opening 14 minutes of play. It was Scotland who would score next with the match thereafter being forgettable for the outperformed Scotland.

Ireland’s third try came 25 minutes in. Scoring was Furlong with the prop going over for a pick-and-go try. It was on the back of a run from Stander from an attacking scrum.

It then went from bad to worse to disastrous for Scotland. One of the best Scottish players, Hamish Watson would leave the field with a bad knee injury. It came from a ruck in which the clearance sale him taken out both from the front and the side.

The remainder of the match saw little resistance from Scotland. Ireland would extent their half-time lead via a penalty from scrum-half Conor Murray while in the second half a try to Andrew Conway and a penalty to Jack Carty sealed Ireland’s humble victory.

Pool A will continue on Tuesday with Russia facing Samoa in Kumagaya. Ireland’s next match is against Japan in Shizuoka on Saturday. Scotland face Samoa in Kobe on Monday, September 30.
