Canada names Sevens Squad for Olympic Qualifier

Canada has named their squad to compete at the Rugby Americas North Olympic Qualifying event in the Cayman Islands next weekend. Harry Jones captains a side short of full strength with five senior players missing with injury.

Having already lost Lucas Hammond, Connor Braid, and Justin Douglas prior to the final round of the HSBC Sevens Series in Paris, further casualties include Admir Cejvanovic and Luke McCloskey. Andrew Coe, Josiah Morra, and Cooper Coats will fill in the gaps at the all-important tournament.

Despite finishing 11th overall and reaching the Cup Quarter Finals just twice in ten attempts, Canada are heavy favorites to earn their spot in the 2020 Olympics at the regional qualifier. They lost out to the USA in 2015, but the Eagles achieved automatic qualification this season and will not be at George Town.

Day one competition will include Bermuda, Mexico, and Barbados. It’s Jamaica who are tipped to be Canada’s rivals, the Crocs sharing their pool with Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana, and hosts Cayman Islands.

All matches will be streamed live on the Rugby Americas North YouTube and Facebook pages.
