Eagles and Pumas make Vegas Semi Finals

The Americas have two title hopes at the Las Vegas Sevens as both the USA and Argentina won their Cup Quarter Final matches to book their place in the final four. Canada’s day ended in defeat but Chile conquered France to earn a shot at the Challenge Trophy.

Martin Iosefo scored two tries for the Eagles in their 19-10 win over Les Bleus to take second place in Pool B. Their Quarter Final match would be against South Africa, whose win over England in their first match looked a distant memory with the USA running out to a 29-0 lead before conceding two late tries.

Argentina’s final pool match against Kenya did not go as planned with the Africans taking a 24-19 result thanks to a Cyprian Kuto double. The wins from Day One, however, were enough to push the Pumas through and they made up for it in the Quarter Final. Santiago Mare was the star of the show, scoring his second try of the game in extra time to send the Pumas through to the Semis.

The Canadians had no luck on Day Two, with two tries from Nathan Hirayama not enough to see them past Samoa in their final pool match. Max McFarland scored twice for Scotland in the Trophy Quarter Final as they edge Canada by a conversion.

Chile were up 7-5 at halftime against Japan but couldn’t muster any offense in the second half and ultimately fell short 19-7. The Cóndores gave the crowd a show in the Trophy Quarter Final, however, as tries from Felipe Brangier, Pedro Verschae, and Francisco Metuaze highlighted a 17-12 win to keep them in the running for 9th overall.

Canada will be up first on Day Three, as they face France in the 13th place Semi Final. Up second will be Chile vs Scotland in the Trophy Semi Final. The Cup Semi Finals will see the USA taking on New Zealand with the winner not only earning a spot in the Final but guaranteed to end the tournament in first overall. Argentina’s road to the Final runs through Samoa.
