SaberCats sign Uruguay pair Magno and Nieto

Having already snapped up star scrumhalf Santiago Arata, the Houston SaberCats have moved to strengthen their forward pack with the addition of two more Uruguay players for the 2019 Major League Rugby season – Diego Magno and Alejandro Nieto. Both were part of the recent World Rugby combine in Glendale, Nieto captaining the Americas Selects against the Raptors.

The two forwards are vastly experienced. Despite being five months short of his 30th birthday, Magno is Uruguay’s all-time most-capped player with 85 appearances for Los Teros. He began his senior career in 2008, switching between lock and flanker before making a permanent shift to lock in 2016.

Nieto, 30, has made 63 appearances for Uruguay since his debut in 2012. An intelligent player known for his strength in the contact area, he has been first choice at No8 for Los Teros since 2014. Nieto and Magno were each part of the 2015 World Cup squad.

The pair – along with Arata – will connect with their new team following the completion of their European tour that will end with a match against Romania in Bucharest on Saturday.
