Uruguay smash Hong Kong to finish 5th

Uruguay had no mercy for their final opponent at the World Rugby u20 Trophy on Sunday as they put Hong Kong to the sword by a score of 78-17. The Teritos close their campaign with two wins and two losses to finish 5th overall, somewhat of a disappointment after entering the tournament with hopes of a top-three finish.

By the 20-minute mark Uruguay had already run out to a 36-0 lead with tries from six different players. Subs began to enter the game soon after with Reinaldo Piussi adding one further score to make it 43-0 at the break.

Hong Kong finally got on the board just after the intermission with Shivan Dukhande getting over the line. All three tries for the Junior Dragons would come from their wingers with Sam Down getting the other two. Paul Altier landed one of his three conversion attempts.

The tries kept coming for Uruguay. Manuel Ardao scored early in the second half and made it a hat-trick with two scores in the final minutes. César Riviere and James McCubbin would get singles and Matías D’Avanzo was a perfect four-for-four on the extras.

Both sides will carry over players into next year’s tournament should they qualify. Uruguay have 13 players eligible for 2019 and Hong Kong 18, including 7 who will continue to be eligible again in 2020.
